History of Online Casinos

The first online casino began its operations in 1996 at the time when the business of online casinos and online gambling was starting to grow.

It all began in 1994 in the island country of Antigua and Barbuda. At that point, they had just passed a jurisdiction granting authority to issue gambling licenses. This event is significant because until this day, many online casinos still use this jurisdiction to secure their gambling licenses. Since no American state want to issue these licenses, Antigua and Barbuda is very much needed.

In 1996, the first online casino obtained a bet. When the licensing law was passed by Antigua and Barbuda in 1994, big events began to happen, one such event is the inauguration of Microgaming, still one of the leading online casino software to this date. As a matter of fact, a large percentage of online casinos use this software especially the Viper software.

Security issues always go hand in hand when money and internet are involved. To this day, one of the leading online security software in the business is CryptoLogic. Since it opened in 1995, it took some time before CryptoLogic bore the fruits of its labor.

At the onset, both CryptoLogic and Microgaming were hard-pressed to make developments, which eventually resulted to InterCasino paving the way for customers to play on the net. But it almost did not materialize because of some legal impediments.

Many obstacles blocked the path to development of the online casino industry. Legality issues were the subjects of judicial and legislative battles when US senator Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) blocked efforts of citizens to gamble online. When one of his anti-gambling bills was defeated, he would initiate another and get some people to support his cause.

Since most anti-gambling bills meant to block online gambling did not proceed, some senators are now ensuring that you find a difficult time making online deposits into the casino by going after credit card providers and wire services. In fact, pending litigations regarding online casinos has always been present at any period of time.

Yet, hundreds of online casinos continue to operate to this day. Independent poker rooms and sports books seem to be opening everywhere, giving online gambling clients a variety of options as to the manner of spending and betting their money. Though legal questions will always remain, the online gambling industry is so huge and influential now any legal opposition to it may soon be useless.
